From September 2014, all children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 in state-funded schools in England will be eligible for free school meals. This is a new scheme called Universal Infant Free School Meals (UIFSM). The current entitlement to Free School Meals (FSM) will also continue to be available to all pupils (including infants) whose parents receive certain benefits and who are registered to receive one. This provides valuable additional funding called the Pupil Premium. It is very important that, if your family is eligible for these benefits, you still register for Free School Meals under the Pupil Premium scheme so that the school will benefit from extra funding per child from central Government each year and also that the children will continue to receive free meals when they are in years 3 to 6 (if you continue to be eligible).
